GAME DAY!

Through hard work in both participation and effort during this school year, Mrs. Hutt's 4th grade class earned a music game day.  Students had the opportunity to visit different game stations around the music room to practice skills in rhythm, note reading, recorder as well as math, reading and working cooperativiely with their team.

A game formerly known as "Fraction Fortress" helps students experience how rhythm and fractions are related.

"Recorder Tic Tac Toe" gives students the opportunity to practice sight reading four beat patterns on their recorders.

After a student plays a measure of music on their recorder they can throw a (magnetic) dart to earn points.

In "Rhythm Bowling" each pin has a rhythmic value.  Using their knowledge of note values students tally up how many beats they were able to knock down.

Tum Balalaika- The correct video!!

Alicia pointed out to me that one of the earlier videos was incorrect.  Somewhere Over the Rainbow was posted instead of Tum Balalaika!  Here is the correct video!  Thank you, Alicia!  And thank you Jaid for pointing out that I thanked the wrong person.  Or was that Alicia too....?  :)

All County Videos for Hine Ma Tov

In the videos, as we practiced on Monday, I sang all syllables as "lai" or "la."  We can add in lyrics once we have learned the melody.  The recording begins at the top of page three and stops at the end of the song.

For any students interested in playing at NYSSMA for piano, voice or an instrument click here for forms.  All forms are due to your  music teacher by January 15, 2015.   Return piano and voice forms to Mrs. Thorn and instrumental forms to Mr. Cifali or Mrs. Ziporkin.

Voice students:  If you are interested in being nominated for All County Chorus in 6th Grade you must have a NYSSMA score.  You will need a private voice teacher to teach you the voice solo.  Please see Mrs. Thorn for any necessary forms or a list of local voice teachers.

All County- Tum Balalaika Recordings

Dear Alicia, Caroline, Jaid, Kate and Noa,

Since we won't have a lot of time in school to prepare I will be making videos of portions of your All County music to make it easier to practice at home.

These videos are from Tum Balalaika, measures 25-41.  Practice your part with the video (either soprano or alto).  When you feel like you're a pro at it play the video for the other part and see if you can sing in harmony.  Do you best to ignore the back ground sounds of my son playing and trying to hit that high F in the soprano part!:)

Ms. Moriarty's Class Sings "Black Socks"

Fourth grade classes continue to practice singing in harmony with rounds.  Ms. Moriarty's class demonstrates singing "Black Socks" in unison as well as a four part round.

Ms. Jakowlew's Third Grade Class Sings "Rum Sum Sum."

The third graders have been practicing singing songs in a round.  Singing in a round involves singing in teams.  Each team sings the same song beginning at different times.  At first rounds can sound more like noise than music to students, but as their ears and brains become used to hearing rounds they will begin to hear the beautiful music that they create.

Here is Ms. Jakolowlew's class performing "Rum Sum Sum" in unison.  By using familiar words that also begin with "uni" (unicorn, unified, unicycle) we discovered that unison means to sing together as one group.

Third grade classes also practiced sing "Rum Sum Sum" as a round in two, three and four parts.

East Hills School Song!

Dear 2nd Graders,
Here are the lyrics for the East Hills School Song!  Have a great time singing it at home!:)

East Hills School Song

There’s a great place in Roslyn,
It’s called the East Hills School.
We’re the young generation, America’s future,
Our teachers are really cool.

As we walk through our halls
With our minds open wide,
It’s the East Hills School,
That makes our faces beam with pride.

Respect and honesty,
Values that we learn.
This is how it’s meant to be,
‘Cause we are the East Hills family,
We are the East Hills family.

Peace and love and harmony,
This is our true test,
Building friendships to last a lifetime,
Roslyn Bulldogs are the best.

Respect and honesty,
Values that we learn.
This is how it’s meant to be,
‘Cause we are the East Hills family,
We are the East Hills family.

 East Hills School.
East Hills School.
East Hills School.
East Hills School.

 EAST HILLS ROCK!

5th Grade Song Writing Contest!

As we spoke about during your music classes, we are having a SONG WRITING CONTEST!  Use the rules I gave you to help you create an amazing winter themed variation of our old friend "Hayride."

Some 5th graders told me that it would be helpful to not just have the lyrics of "Hayride" (which are on the contest rules sheet too) but to also have access to the melody.  Here are two videos: the first is Part 1 of "Hayride," the second video is part 2.  I hope they are helpful as you create your winter variations!

I am so excited to read and sing your variations.  Please have your songs to me by October 14, 2014 so there is time to choose the winning variation as well as teach the winning song to the 5th grade chorus to perform at the Winter Concert!

3rd Graders: "B A Superhero" at 100%!

Click here to hear "B A Superhero" at 100%!   If you play along, please note that the song stops early.  It stops at the D.S. al coda when you're eyes would jump back up to measure 5 (5 in a box.)   Have fun!

3rd Grade BAG-O-saurus

With our concert coming up in May it's time for me to start making decisions about what songs we will perform for your families.  Since you have been ROCKING "B A Superhero" I think it's time for a BIGGER challenge with "BAG-O-saurus!"  Take a listen here and let me know what you think!   If you click "Play MP3" you will get to hear most of the song.  With parental permission the song may be downloaded in its entirety for $0.99.   Ask any 4th grader and they will probably tell you that it was their favorite recorder concert song!:)

4th Grade Chorus: "Dance, Dance, Dance"

Here is a video of one of chorus songs for the Spring Concert.  This version is a little different with more harmonies, but it is fun to listen and try to sing along.
Please note that this video beings on page 8 at measure 34, not right at the beginning.

5th Grade Chorus: "A Child of Song"

Here is one of our most challenging songs for our Spring Concert.
Click here to see an amazing  performance of "A Child of Song."

Please start coming to chorus rehearsals on Thursday mornings if you haven't attended yet.  I've missed you all and can't wait to sing with you again!:)
